Typhoon Saudel Triggers Widespread Evacuations in Southeastern China

Typhoon Saudel unleashed relentless rainfall across the southeastern provinces of China last week, particularly impacting Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, and Guangdong. A staggering 416.5mm of rain fell in a single day in Putian, Fujian, with surrounding areas experiencing even higher totals exceeding 500mm. Authorities reported that nearly 600,000 residents were evacuated from areas prone to flooding, while an additional 128,000 individuals across 53 counties in Jiangxi faced emergencies, prompting evacuations for 9,000 of them. The aftermath of the typhoon has revealed extensive damage, with widespread reports of flooding, landslides, and infrastructure collapse. In Wenzhou, Zhejiang, over 2,500 students and teachers found themselves trapped in their school compound due to sudden flash floods. In Putian, the situation escalated when a river embankment gave way on Thursday, resulting in the destruction of 100 homes and necessitating the rescue of 1,260 individuals. Tragically, the storm's impact extended to loss of life, with a landslide in Suichuan County, Jiangxi, claiming the lives of three people, while nine others remain unaccounted for. Rescue operations continue as authorities work diligently to assist those affected by the devastating storm, highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by extreme weather events in the region.
