In response to the persistent heavy rainfall, schools in Istanbul along with five other provinces—Kocaeli, Sakarya, Yalova, Düzce, and Zonguldak—will remain closed today, October 16. The severe weather conditions have caused widespread disruption, with roads turning into rivers and vehicles being swept away. Tragically, three fatalities have been reported as a result of the flooding.
Yesterday, students in six provinces were already excused from attending school as local authorities took precautionary measures. The Governor's office has indicated that the heavy rainfall is expected to continue for several more days, and a review of the physical conditions of schools will be conducted over the weekend.
Istanbul Governor Davut Gül announced that the city has recorded an unprecedented 261 kilograms of rainfall, marking a historic high in 84 years. "We have mobilized 46,597 personnel to assist residents affected by the flooding. Some individuals have been rescued using boats and other vehicles," he stated.
Rescue operations are currently underway at 14 different locations, with efforts focused on reopening 16 blocked roads. Governor Gül also mentioned that decisions regarding the closure of universities are still pending as the situation evolves.
