Özgür Özel, the leader of the Yeni Parti, expressed his condolences regarding the recent flooding disaster in Istanbul, which has left many affected. He emphasized that the flood-prone areas, such as Ayazağa, were opened up for urban development during the AK Party's tenure in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. "The accountability for the lives lost should be directed towards the AK Party," Özel stated, highlighting the party's responsibility in the matter.
Özel further addressed Minister Murat Kurum, questioning the location of Sazlıbosna and criticizing the decision to construct residential buildings in an area that should have been protected. He remarked, "You are drying up a reservoir only to build homes in its place. The ground there is problematic, and any construction in such areas poses significant risks."
His comments come in light of the devastating floods that have raised concerns about urban planning and disaster preparedness in Istanbul. Özel's statements call for a closer examination of the policies and decisions made by local authorities that may have contributed to the disaster, urging that lessons must be learned to prevent future tragedies. As the city begins recovery efforts, the focus now shifts to accountability and the need for sustainable urban development practices.
