Communities Form Self-Defense Units Amid Rising Threats to Environmental Defenders

In a troubling trend, defenders of forests and waterways were killed at an alarming frequency in 2025, with one individual losing their life every three days. According to the annual report from the independent organization Global Witness, the vast majority of these killings—85%—occurred in Latin America, underscoring the region's perilous conditions for environmental advocates.
