Communities Form Self-Defense Units Amid Rising Threats to Environmental Defenders
In a troubling trend, defenders of forests and waterways were killed at an alarming frequency in 2025, with one individual losing their life every three days. According to the annual report from the independent organization Global Witness, the vast majority of these killings—85%—occurred in Latin America, underscoring the region's perilous conditions for environmental advocates. In response to this escalating violence, numerous communities have taken matters into their own hands by forming self-defense units. These grassroots organizations aim to protect their land and natural resources amidst increasing threats from organized crime and professional assassins. The report revealed that more than one-third of the 124 documented murders of environmental defenders were linked to criminal enterprises, particularly in contexts where drug trafficking intersected with illegal activities such as logging and unregulated gold mining in indigenous territories. The rise in violence against those who stand up for nature is prompting urgent calls for greater protections and support for these defenders. As illegal activities continue to encroach upon vulnerable ecosystems, communities are left with little choice but to arm themselves in defense of their rights and the environment. The situation remains dire, with the need for international attention and intervention more pressing than ever to safeguard those who dedicate their lives to preserving our planet.
