Following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery, athletes must exercise caution when considering a return to sports, as doing so prematurely can heighten the risk of re-injuring the knee. Prof. Dr. İbrahim Azboy, a specialist in Orthopedics and Traumatology, stresses that the rehabilitation process usually takes between six to nine months, and athletes should be patient during this critical period.
Azboy highlights that for a successful return to athletic activities, the strength of the operated knee should reach approximately 90% of the strength of the unaffected knee. He emphasizes that decisions regarding returning to sports should not be made based solely on the passage of time but should consider the individual’s recovery progress and overall readiness.
Athletes are encouraged to follow a structured rehabilitation program, which includes strength training and performance assessments, to ensure they regain full functionality before re-engaging in sports. By adhering to these guidelines, athletes can reduce the likelihood of facing setbacks or further injuries, allowing for a safer and more sustainable return to their sports.
