A New Era in Elder Care: Is Long-Term Care Insurance on the Horizon in Turkey?

The elderly population in Turkey has experienced a significant increase, with the number of individuals aged 65 and older rising by 20.5% over the last five years, now totaling approximately 9 million 583 thousand. This demographic shift is placing increased pressure on the country's social security and healthcare budgets. In light of these challenges, the government is reportedly considering the implementation of long-term care insurance as part of its Medium-Term Economic Program. Discussions regarding the potential structure of the long-term care insurance system are currently underway. Various models are being explored, including those that involve premiums, state support, or a combination of both. These options aim to provide financial assistance to the elderly population while ensuring sustainable funding for the care services they require. Murat Bekmezci from CNN TÜRK and Tarkan Zengin, a faculty member at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University, provided insights into the developments surrounding this initiative. They emphasized the importance of a well-crafted care insurance system that addresses the needs of the aging population while also considering the financial implications for the state and its citizens.
